Grand Prospect Heights Neo-Grec Brownstone With Sumptuous Woodwork Asks $4.575 Million

This large Neo-Grec brownstone in Prospect Heights has four stories plus a basement, with renovated eat-in kitchens in the extensions of the garden floor rental and the triplex’s parlor level. It was built around 1881 in tandem with the anticipated opening of the Brooklyn Bridge, and developer John Donovan and Brooklyn architect Marshall J. Morrill constructed it as part of a speculative row of five, according to the designation report for the Prospect Heights Historic District. The row stands out on St. Marks Avenue for its bold bracketed cornices, projecting pedimented doorways with incised scrolls and fluted columns, triangular bays, and pronounced molded window surrounds with incised foliate patterns. Through the arched double entrance doors you may catch a glimpse of the exquisite woodwork to be found inside. The parlor level of 130 St. Marks Avenue displays a wealth of historical detail and craftsmanship, with its floor-to-ceiling pier mirror with fine carved columns, extensive crown molding, and columned opening to the dining room. The latter has an incised marble mantel and a carved mirror above it. The walls, painted a deep indigo, resonate with the rich stained woodwo...

We’ve all been there before — the holidays are around the corner, and you have a long list of people to buy gifts for. Worse, they all have different tastes. Before you know it, you’re buying a stack of gift cards and calling it a year.   No matter who you’re gifting — a friend, partner, mentor or colleague — a carefully chosen book can be a great gift for a peer, employee or boss. It’s a way to connect with others over a shared interest, show them you’ve put thought into your gift and give them an opportunity to learn and grow. This is especially true for the end of the year, which enables you to help set the tone for your recipient’s year ahead. After I wrote Top of Mind, I always noticed an uptick in sales in the fall, right as people were purchasing holiday gifts. Now, every fall, I gather some of the books I’m buying as gifts for people and share the list so it’s easy to find the best fit when you want to give a dose of inspiration. So many of us want to improve ourselves, but we aren’t sure where to start. Robert Glazer, founder and CEO of Acceleration Partners, shares a framework that any person can u...

Furthering its reach into Africa, ArcelorMittal South Africa officially opened its 35 000 t/y capacity rod mill in Maputo, Mozambique, which would supply the domestic construction market in the country. “The investment is part of a wider strategy to grow in Africa. Mozambique will always be special to us as the place where we cut our teeth doing business outside of our country,” said ArcelorMittal SA CEO Nonkululeko Nyembezi-Heita in an address to dignitaries, businesspeople, and journalists in Maputo on Saturday. The “relatively small” mill was one of two mills acquired by ArcelorMittalSA from the Mozambican government in 2006 for $11,4-million. The mill was the first entity the company has established outside of South Afric...

Optimizing the sorting and filling of returnable glass

Rothaus Brewery, a famous traditional brewer located high in Germany’s Black Forest, recently invested in two major projects: a new refillable glass bottle sortation system and a new glass bottle filling line. Gebo Cermex was largely responsible for the bottle sortation system, while KHS provided the 132-nozzle filler that anchors the new filling line. On both projects, maximum uptime and increased reliability were made possible thanks to the line engineering and conveying expertise of Gebo Cermex. Working closely with Rothaus engineers, Gebo Cermex was responsible for integrating 30 different machines from more than a dozen different suppliers. Gebo Cermex also installed stainless-steel-belt bottle conveyors and stainless-steel-belt crate conveyors that are essential to all of the depalletizing, un-crating, combining, accumulating, laning, sorting, re-crating, and re-palletizing that goes on. A little background on the German beer market helps make clear how important the new sortation technology was. Returnable glass bottles are still by far the dominant package format for beer in Germany. Once upon a time, brewers relied on a small number of standardized bottle styles, w...

The Secret To The World’s Lightest Gaming Mouse Is Lots Of Holes

In order to create what it calls “the world’s lightest gaming mouse,” the engineers at peripheral maker Glorious PC Gaming Race took a mouse and put holes all in it. The result is the Model O, a very good gaming mouse that weighs only 67 grams and may trigger trypophobia. “You’ll barely feel the holes,” reads the copy on the Model O’s product page, answering the question I imagine most people have when looking at the honeycombed plastic shell. I’ve used the ultra-light accessory for a couple weeks now, and the product page is correct. It feels slightly bumpy under the palm. Only when I look directly at the Model O do I feel mildly disturbed by the pattern of holes covering the top and its underside. The effect is less jarring when the RGB lighting is cycling. While I’m actively using the mouse, my giant hands cover it completely. Glorious PC Gaming Race says the holes allow for better airflow, keeping hands cool, but my massive paws negate that benefit. I worry about dirt getting in the holes, but that’s nothing I can’t avoid by not being a total slob. Perhaps it’s time. The Model O slides over my mouse pad effortlessly thanks to its ridiculously low weight and the rounded plast...

The best new London fitness classes to help you get back on track

The good news is that while we were all busy swigging rosé for the best part of the summer, there were some exciting new additions to London’s already booming fitness scene and they’re bound to give you the motivation to get back track.  This highly ‘grammable Shoreditch-based movement studio (pictured above) opened its doors in August and teaches a variety of classes, including gymnastics on the rings, handbalance skills workshops and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. There’s a new functional fitness studio on the block. Cirq offers both lifting and circuits-based classes, as well as Flex sessions, in which gym-goers can take advantage of a continuous circuit displayed on screens if they’re short on time or unable to commit to a specific class, allowing them to train for more or less time than the typical 40-minute circuits class. Sweat by BXR just opened its second studio in the capital across town from the flagship Marylebone studio in Canary Wharf, where you’ll find two more of its signature studios, including the notorious VersaClimber suite where you’ll be put through your paces with one of the toughest full-body cardio workouts you’ll f...

Daily Digest: Pork roll for breakfast, steak for dinner, and a “mediocre” rum nightcap | Food

When he’s not concocting mediocre rum drinks, Tyler Sim works at Brown’s Court Bakery in downtown Charleston. Dave Infante/Staff When he’s not concocting mediocre rum drinks, Tyler Sim works at Brown’s Court Bakery in downtown Charleston. Dave Infante/Staff This is part of the Post and Courier’s Daily Digest series in which one of our food reporters asks a local to describe their day of eating in detail. For breakfast, I made a pork roll-and-egg sandwich. My girlfriend is from Philly, and she sort of introduced that to me. Obviously, it’s really good. So I made that on a bagel from Bruegger’s. I know, I know, I messed up. I don’t know that I ate lunch, but I drank coffee throughout the day. I just drink it black. I specifically like Counter Culture’s La Golondrina blend, because that’s what we sell here (at Brown’s Court). For dinner, I made a steak sandwich with arugula and homemade pesto mayo on a demi baguette. The steak was from Harris Teeter. They had a sale on filet. I just pan-fried it in a regular-old frying pan to medium-rare, then cut it into strips. I’ve got this bottle of Bacardi Lime. I didn’t a...
