Asphalt Roof Shingles – Showcase of Styles, Colors, Options

Three-tab shingles have been around a long time and are still the most popular and economical roofing today, thanks to products like GAF’s Marquis WeatherMax. Designed for homeowners who demand superior performance, classic detailing, and a traditional three-tab product, the super heavyweight design is made with an extra-strong Micro Weave® Core making it less resistant to tearing than standard shingles and better suited to bitter cold temperatures. Supreme® AR three-tab shingles from Owens Corning are the smart choice when you need to balance curb appeal, weather resistance and value. These shingles are engineered to resist roof discoloration from algae growth, are wind resistant up to 60 MPH, and have a Class A UL fire rating. Their scalloped edges and shadow lines provide a unique depth and richness to complement any home. If you’re looking for a traditional three-tab asphalt shingle built to weather the elements, the XT™25 from CertainTeed is a worthy contender—particularly as it was rated #1 shingle and “best buy” by a leading consumer products magazine. Built on a super tough fiberglass base and backed with a 25-year transferable Limited warranty, t...

Honda unveiled its major EICMA models, led by the new CBR1000RR-R, a day before the show,

Honda unveiled its major EICMA models, led by the new CBR1000RR-R, a day before the show, but it did have something new to show visitors at the Milano Rho Fiera. In what’s now an annual tradition, Honda presented a concept bike produced by its Rome R&D Centre called the CB4X. This is the fifth year the Rome R&D Centre has produced a concept, and the third year it used the CBR650R‘s inline-Four as the platform (the engine’s aesthetically-pleasing cascading header pipes definitely lends itself well to concept designs). Designer Valerio Aiello and his team developed the CB4X under the theme “fun seven days a week,” describing it as a sport tourer with a bit of a crossover (Honda’s term for adventure-ish styled bikes). The CB4X concept features a hunched half-fairing design that would redirect air around the rider but still leaves the engine and the aforementioned pipes exposed.  The windscreen is adjustable, and the seat looks pretty comfortable, for a concept, and we presume that tail cover is removable for pillion seating. The way the aluminum subframe attaches to the side plates is rather elegant, making the two parts look fully-integrated. Other features include handg...

Learn about some of the main companies that are equipped to build a 3D printed house.

Learn about some of the main companies that are equipped to build a 3D printed house. The technique may have a ways to go, but already what’s being done is impressive. Throughout history, the construction industry has largely remained unchanged, with most structures still requiring workers to add layers of bricks or other building materials atop each other. However, the conventional approach is becoming outdated in the modern age, as it heavily relies on individual skill, produces large amounts of waste and noise, and yields low productivity. Moving into the territory is 3D printing, which promises to build houses faster, cheaper, and more accurately. With benefits like these, it’s no wonder that 3D printing construction is gaining momentum. To put things in perspective, in 2016, the Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates declared that by 2030, a quarter of all the buildings in Dubai would be 3D printed. With 3D printed buildings on the rise, one begins to wonder, who is building these structures? That’s what this article attempts to address, but the answer isn’t so simple… Skeptics still doubt the viability of 3D printed houses. 3D printing construction companies rece...

Older millennials will no doubt remember the nation’s whirlwind romance with Hypercolor, a brand of heat-reactive

Older millennials will no doubt remember the nation’s whirlwind romance with Hypercolor, a brand of heat-reactive clothing that lived and died between 1991 and 1992. The garments were manufactured with two layers of dye—a permanent, colored dye overlaid with a thermochromic, colorless dye that would change color with the temperature of the clothing. If you’re thinking that sounds like a disaster for people who sweat profusely (or at all), you’re not the only one. But the chairman of Hypercolor manufacturer Generra insisted at the time that sweat-related blotches were abstract and relatively unnoticeable, and the public seemed to agree with him. The shirts, tank tops, and shorts were the hottest trend of 1991—so successful that Generra couldn’t keep up with the demand. By the time they did increase output, the novelty had all but worn off, and the company folded in 1992. Hypercolor’s cultural impact may have been short-lived, but if you’re one of the many people who thinks color-changing clothing seems like tons of fun, there’s still hope: Shadow Shifter has its own heat-reactive line of T-shirts available on Amazon. According to the product information, the shirts use “improved ...

Below, we identify the five essential fall boot styles, with six examples of each to suit every budget. Plus: a series of quippy FAQs to help you determine when and why to break each of them out of the closet. Guys who despise laces, streetwear converts and well-heeled men who regularly fend off the paparazzi. A little band from Liverpool called the Beatles. They brought the zippered variant to America in the ‘60s. But it’s a style that’s been preferred by all kinds of music greats, from the Velvet Undergound to more recently, Kanye West. Suede is in. Also make sure they fit snug around the ankle. The toe box should be narrow but not pointy. Keep it simple. Any of our options below can be dressed up (a suit!) or down (jeans, white tee and leather jacket!), depending on the occasion. Certainly. But you have to mind one very important thing: the length of your pants. Your hemline should stop right below the ankle. Not too high where it looks contrived. But just enough so you show off the shoe. A boot that hits the ankle, usually with only two or three ey...

Why is there so much enthusiast hate on electronic driver’s assistance aids such as lane departure

Why is there so much enthusiast hate on electronic driver’s assistance aids such as lane departure warning, blind spot warning, adaptive cruise, front and side cameras, etc? It reminds me of arguments against seat belts that arose in the ’70s. As a package, these are not that expensive to incorporate into a vehicle (I can retrofit a decent backup camera for less than $50) and perhaps should also be mandated rather than remaining expensive options. The phrase “not that expensive to incorporate” assumes your price elasticity of demand is a bellwether for everyone in the autoblogosphere. Good luck with that, son!  And backup cameras are now mandatory: considering the price/availability of smartphone cameras, it’s no surprise a dashboard’s multi function screen accommodates one. And if one camera is cheap-ish, incorporating 3 more won’t kill the pocketbook… right? Not knowing the cost of adding seat belts back then, who knows their impact on MSRP relative to hourly wages, then comparing it to our predicament. Witness the proliferation of (EDIT: 4-wheel) anti-lock braking systems in the USA, from bespoke German bits only available in 1985.5 Lincoln Continentals — sorry 1986 C...

Von Roll explains how its NEXT GEN core filler for aircraft interiors mean less material, less

Von Roll explains how its NEXT GEN core filler for aircraft interiors mean less material, less weight – and less manufacturing costs too. Thanks to the use of lightweight materials while offering very high stability and stiffness, sandwich panel constructions are very often used in today’s sophisticated aircraft interior structures. In structural applications, such as ceiling or floor panels, kitchen or toilet walls, sandwich panels can carry significant loads without material deformation and offer high impact resistance. Sandwich panels consist of a honeycomb core made from various materials, from aluminium to non-metal constructions. They are manufactured thanks to the use of pre-impregnated glass- or carbon-fibre based prepregs, that are laminated on the top and on the bottom of the honeycomb core and then cured in an oven, press or autoclave. Often, the designers of interior components have requirements to reinforce some local areas of these sandwich panels, e.g. the panel edges or the areas where material inserts need to be fixed within the sandwich structure: a typical case is the fixation of seats to the aircraft floor panel by bolts, requiring a series of inserts within ...

Reebok earlier this month launched a maternity collection, designed for new and expecting mothers, according to

Reebok earlier this month launched a maternity collection, designed for new and expecting mothers, according to a company press release. The collection is meant to offer “options for an active lifestyle,” including hitting the gym or running errands. To start with, the collection will include leggings and tank tops in sizes XS to XL, with high-stretch fabric. The core products, the Lux Maternity Tight and the Seamless Maternity Tank, are both built with softness, comfort and support in mind, according to the release. Priced at $65 and $40 respectively, the products are available in the U.S. currently, with plans to roll out globally starting in the fall of 2019. The collection debuted with black and navy, but the company intends to offer more color choices soon. In a world where athletics retail, and athleisure in particular, is striking a chord with consumers, major players are looking for more ways to give women access to the trend. Reebok’s move into the maternity space is just one example of that. Earlier in the year, Nike made a play for the yoga market, debuting options for both men and women in a direct shot at specialty retailers Lululemon and Athleta....
