To decarbonize we must decomputerize: why we need a Luddite revolution | Technology

Big tech claims AI and digitization will bring a better future. But putting computers everywhere is bad for people and the planet Our built environment is becoming one big computer. “Smartness” is coming to saturate our stores, workplaces, homes, cities. As we go about our daily lives, data is made, stored, analyzed and used to make algorithmic inferences about us that in turn structure our experience of the world. Computation encircles us as a layer, dense and interconnected. If our parents and our grandparents lived with computers, we live inside them. A growing chorus of activists, journalists and scholars are calling attention to the dangers of digital enclosure. Employers are using algorithmic tools to surveil and control workers. Cops are using algorithmic tools to surveil and control communities of color. And there is no shortage of dystopian possibilities on the horizon: landlords evicting tenants with “smart locks”, health insurers charging higher premiums because your Fitbit says you don’t exercise enough. Digitization doesn’t just pose a risk to people, however. It also poses a risk to the planet. July was the hottest month on record. Large chunks of the Arctic are me...

Research realizes innovation in fabricating reflective coatings for high-power UV optics (MAGAZINE)

A consortium of optics researchers describes a new method for fabricating ultraviolet optics that leverages a metallic intermediate layer on a plastic-coated aluminum reflector to increase stable lifetime operation under high-power UV LED irradiation. A potentially more-cost-effective approach uses metal-coated surfaces to reflect the light, which can be produced by depositing a thin — about 0.2‒0.5-µm aluminum (Al) layer — on a plastic mold6‒9. However, for many applications where high optical power densities above 1W/cm2 are required, such a reflector heats up and will exhibit damage due to surface modification, cracks, and even delamination. In the following study, we demonstrate that by applying a metallic intermediate layer such as a combination of copper (Cu) and nickel (Ni) with a thickness greater than 30 µm, it is possible to dramatically reduce the maximum temperature of the reflector — in this experiment, from 117°C to 51°C — and obtain long-term stable operation of the reflector under high-power irradiation from UV LEDs. FIG. 1. Shown is an ultraviolet (UV) LED light source designed by OSA Opto Light with parabolic reflector arrays produced out of either full alumin...

Ashley Farnsworth didn’t notice a lack of pockets in clothing designed for girls until she received

Ashley Farnsworth didn’t notice a lack of pockets in clothing designed for girls until she received a tiny pair of cargo shorts for her second child. The knee-length, loosefitting bottoms gave her newborn son six storage options for his life of “sleeping, crying and pooping,” while shorts made for her running, playing 2½-year-old daughter had a two-inch inseam and streamlined rear end instead. “Why?” the Fort Worth mom wanted to know. The answer: Pockets, like most apparel, have a gendered history. The twist: It has only recently trickled down to most children’s clothing — a development that has parents, including famous ones such as Reese Witherspoon, as well as small retailers, using the Twitter hashtags #PocketsForGirls and #girlsdeservepockets, both of which have generated considerable buzz online. Lack of access to pockets is nothing new for the wealthy Western women held up as paragons of femininity. After all, they lost theirs over 200 years ago. But for much of history, working-class women, older women and girls had storage space in aprons, overalls and smock-like pinafores. That sartorial separateness evaporated in recent decades, with girls’ clothing increasingly mirro...

There has been a lot of buzz lately about Adele and her weight loss and many

There has been a lot of buzz lately about Adele and her weight loss and many stories are attributing it to Pilates, as well as her diet. Now being a Pilates teacher myself and a full believer in its benefits I need to clarify something: no one thing can make you lose weight more than the next, other than creating a caloric deficit. If you are consuming less energy (calories) than you are expending then you will lose weight, and if you are not, then the scale will not drop. You can not outrun a bad diet when it comes to weight loss. But… you can use exercise to help maintain your weight, meaning if you are totally content with how things are now you can use exercise to undo bad food choices. I have a weight that is my dream weight, my weight where I feel like if it wasn’t illegal, I would walk around naked all the time. The problem with that weight is that it is impossible to maintain. A few weekends of brunching and happy hour and I am up 5 lbs. But that weight that is 5lbs up is something that I, and you, can hold onto as long as you balance your calorie consumption with your output so that you come out at zero. If you know you have a big night ahead of you, have a big workout ...

Intel’s foldable Horseshoe Bend is a little laptop with a big screen. Like, really big

In a CNET exclusive, Intel reveals how its premium Horseshoe Bend laptop PC works. Now it needs to get PC makers on board. If you’re buying a PC, you may be trying to decide whether you want a big laptop with a big screen or a little laptop with a little screen. But thanks to new folding display technology, Intel has built a prototype PC called Horseshoe Bend that could offer the best of both worlds: a little laptop with a big screen. And I mean a really big screen. It measures 17.3 inches diagonally, a notch bigger than the 16-inch display in Apple’s latest high-end MacBook Pro. You can best appreciate it — as CNET has in an exclusive look — when you fully unfold Horseshoe Bend, flip out its built-in kickstand, perch it on a tabletop and use its wireless keyboard. But that’s just one setup. You can also partially fold it into a regular clamshell laptop shape — except that its enormous screen sweeps down from the top all the way to where the keyboard would go. To type, you can use either a virtual keyboard or, if you’re squeezed into an airline seat, magnetically attach the physical keyboard that covers the bottom portion of the screen. ...

Boosted Coyote Part 5: Adding Fuel To The Fire With DeatschWerks

Sometimes, projects go smoothly. Sometimes, they don’t. The first four installments of the Boosted Coyote engine project have definitely been the former, thanks to the hard work and expertise of Livernois Motorsports and Engineering. The team was able to take the few salvageable pieces of project-owner Ivan Korda’s OEM engine and craft it into one of their Race-Series long-blocks, with the intention of shooting for 1,000 rear-wheel horsepower. However, in the last installment of the project, we did hit our first hiccup in the project. After upgrading the injectors to DeatschWerks 1,500cc/min units before going to the dyno, we thought that Ivan’s GT350 twin-fuel-pump setup would be enough to supply the juice we needed. We were wrong, as Ivan ended up maxing out the GT350 fuel system. While the car ran great on the dyno with the third-generation Whipple 2.9L supercharger, we came up well short of our goal. The boost was capped at 16psi, and the engine could only spin to 7,500 rpm before running out of pump. The final number posted on the dyno that day was 822 rwhp and 630 lb-ft of rear-wheel torque. Nice numbers, but not what we were hoping for. If you’re already running a twin-p...

Challenger, Gray, & Christmas, Inc. released their annual job cuts report recently.  They reported that 2019

Challenger, Gray, & Christmas, Inc. released their annual job cuts report recently.  They reported that 2019 saw a 10% increase in job cuts over 2018 and that it was the highest annual total of job cuts since 2015. They also reported that there were fewer job cuts in November and December of 2019 than in November and December of 2018, suggesting that the year ended in a more positive place.  As with most economic reports, the interesting part is in the details, particularly regarding the sectors experiencing the most job cuts, which included retail, auto, manufacturing, and technology, and the reasons for these job cuts, which were primarily attributed to restructurings and company or unit closings.   When you look into the details, you see evidence of the feeling that many people have expressed—that the overall economy is doing well but underneath there is a lot of churn and upheaval. Industries that are laying people off are also hiring, but they are hiring people with different kinds of skills. Technology and consumer changes continue to impact industries (like retail). And the pruning of existing businesses continues based on profitability and growth expectations. I have...

All 2,493 items targeted by China’s tariffs in US trade war — Quartz

China’s latest tariff retaliation, announced today, will hit some $60 billion in US exports, including hundreds of agricultural, mining, and manufactured products, threatening jobs and profits at companies around the United States.  Before the trade war starts in earnest, China bought about 17% of US agricultural exports and was a major market for other goods, from Maine lobster to Boeing aircraft. It has been the largest market for Apple iPhones since 2016. Since the escalation of tariffs, though, China has stopped buying soybeans and lobsters, and Apple warned it would miss its expected Christmas holiday sales figures because of trade tensions. In addition to the 25% tariffs below, Beijing also added 20% tariffs on 1,078 US products, 10% tariffs on 974 US products, and 5% tariffs on 595 US products (all links in Chinese). The list was translated from China’s ministry of finance press release using Google translate, and may be inexact in spots. Quartz also rearranged some items on the list to group them into categories, and they may not be in the order of their “harmonized tariff schedule” codes.  Air Filter, Oil Filter, Fuel Filter, Cabin Filter, Industrial Filter – Gold...
