The coronavirus generation: We became parents of a baby boy in the cradle of a pandemic

I thought of a joke, a bad one, a dad one, the kind I’m excited to try on my son one day, before he’s consumed by cynicism and other ailments of the adult world: I bet cheddar kangaroos taste good, but I worry they can’t swim. This was March 5. It was yesteryear; it was two-and-a-half weeks ago. At 11:15 p.m. that night, our baby was on his way. Laura and I gathered our belongings for the long hospital stay. We must’ve looked silly, darting around in our dim dining room, shadows flickering against the walls, packed for the end of the world. Or the beginning. Three or four changes of clothes. Toothbrushes. Books, for some reason. The bag of provisions I’d picked up that afternoon: the Goldfish, of course, but also popcorn, salted almonds, and other important things I snuck in. What a world we didn’t know we were leaving behind. This was back in the bygone era when Cam Newton was the Panthers’ franchise quarterback, when we were still in the same calendar week that Donald Trump rallied in Charlotte, when unemployment was at its lowest since before 9/11, when grocery stores had toilet paper, when local restaurants served customers food at tables. When the United States had all of 2...

Fertilizer Blender Manufacturers, Ag Retailers Agree the Time May Be Right for a Prosperous Mixing Season

A quarter of the ag retailers who responded to CropLife’s annual Buying Intention Survey indicated they will increase spending on mixers and blenders in 2019. That proportion is on the high end compared to other types of agricultural equipment. Only 15% of those retailers said they would spend less on mixing and blending equipment. Darin Ebeling, Vice President of Sales and Marketing with Sackett-Waconia, says his company is seeing a rise in requests for systems that incorporate value-added products and systems for specialty products, such as those used in the turf and ornamental market. In addition, Sackett-Waconia’s support of the 4R Nutrient Stewardship Certification Program since its inception in March of 2014 is paying off. “Now that the ag market’s focus has shifted to improved nutrient stewardship practices — the 4R program in particular — we also see more attention being paid to the quality of the blend,” Ebeling says. “We have been on the forefront of offering precision blending systems for over 20 years.” Shawn Hudspeth, General Manager with Adams Fertilizer Equipment, expects strong spring sales predicated by the wet fall. He says blending speed and transportation wi...

Revamped BMC Teammachine ALR promises carbon performance on aluminum budgets

BMC has replaced its existing Teammachine ALR aluminum road racing platform with an all-new frameset designed to more closely mimic the performance, look, and feel of its more expensive Teammachine SLR cousin. Lighter, sleeker, and more comfortable than before, the Teammachine ALR may be dubbed as a “gateway model” for more expensive versions in the BMC lineup, but many buyers will likely call it good right there. BMC is once again using hydroformed tubing for the Teammachine ALR, although the newly refined triple-butted wall thicknesses help bring the claimed weight down to 1,190g for a painted 54cm rim-brake model — 60g lighter than before. BMC has moved to size-specific tubing this time around, too, for what should be a more consistent ride quality across the size range. Bike companies often try to get their aluminum frames to mimic the performance of carbon fiber frames in one way or another. In the case of the Teammachine ALR, BMC says the new model is most like the upper-end Teammachines in terms of ride comfort. Bottom bracket and rear triangle stiffness are supposedly nearly identical as well, but the front triangle is said to be 7% less rigid in terms of torsion. That r...

Perham has 370 street lights and 230 private-area lights, in places such as parking lots, for a total of 600 lights. These lights are owned and maintained by the Otter Tail Power Company. The city of Perham has an agreement with the power company to have the street lights illuminated. Currently, Perham’s street lights are high-intensity discharge (HID) which are high-pressure sodium lights, said Jon Fabre, Marketing Program Supervisor at Otter Tail Power Company. These lights have a low color rendering index causing them to emit a yellow-colored light that allows for little color differentiation in vision. These lights also provide a limited field of vision to motorists and pedestrians, as well as fill the night sky with light pollution. Perham is one of many Minnesota cities planning to convert to light-emitting diode (LED) technology in 2020. The Otter Tail Power Company’s LED tariff and replacement plan was approved by the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission on Nov. 30, 2017. “We are excited to partner with Otter Tail Power Company on this lighting upgrade,” Perham City Manager Jonathan Smith said. “LED streetlights will help control cost and increase energy savings, impro...

The primary pipe and tube category that Preston analyzes that is of interest to the Tube & Pipe Journal® readership is mechanical tubing. This category includes conduit, off-the-welder tubes with wall thickness less than 0.156 inch, hot-finished seamless, cold-drawn seamless, and drawn-over-mandrel products. The applications are broad, as is the manufacturing base.  This isn’t to exclude other tube and pipe products. Indeed, all pipe and tube products are significant contributors to the U.S. economy. In total this year, pipe and tube shipments from domestic mills will represent about 14 percent of steel manufactured in this country. To put this into perspective, based on data researched by Preston, auto manufacturing will consume a similar amount of steel this year. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, durable goods manufacturing shipments decreased by 0.2% in December, the sixth consecutive decline. The decrease was driven by a 0.4% drop in shipments of transportation equipment. However, new orders for durable goods in December, again driven by transportation equipment, increased by 2.4%. Excluding transportation equipment, new durable goods orders fell by 0.1%. Total durab...
